The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has selected the Region of Murcia as one of the new sites for the European Space Agency’s Business Incubation Centres (ESA-BIC) in Spain, alongside Castilla-La Mancha and the Basque Country.
Murcia’s inclusion strengthens the region’s position within the aerospace sector and integrates it into the national network of ESA incubators, which already has centres in Andalusia, Catalonia, Castilla y León, the Community of Madrid and the Valencian Community. These centres are coordinated and co-financed by the ministry, through the Spanish Space Agency, in collaboration with the ESA.
The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, highlighted that the Government “is reinforcing its unprecedented commitment to the space sector,” positioning Spain as a European benchmark in space entrepreneurship and advancing an industrial policy aligned with Europe’s strategic challenges.
The president of the regional government referred to the designation on social media.
The Government’s delegate in the Region of Murcia, Francisco Lucas Ayala, also underlined the importance of securing this designation.
The mayor, José Miguel Luengo, described it as a “boost” to the CAETRA dual-technologies project and to the municipality’s positioning in the aerospace sector.
The new centre, overseen by the European Space Agency, will add to September’s national UNVEX drone fair and will consolidate the former airport as a hub of innovation linked to air and space. The site will be driven by two pillars: the business hub tied to the aerospace industry and the OM2 project, a future recovery centre for Mar Menor species with scientific and tourism dimensions.
